5 Whys Challenge: Huib Schoots

huibschootsIt’s a new year, and that means that the conference is less than a month away! Did you register already?

This time I want to mention a thing that we do everyday, but don’t pay attention to much: We’re learning all the time, in different ways (like a going to a conference). The way we learn is by doing something new (like hands-on workshops).

Whether it’s something deliberate (“I’m going to learn Ruby”), or we find ourselves in an uncharted territory (“that new feature smells like a security breach”) we learn by exploring. We try new things, and learn by the way of results. The next time you ask yourself “…but what happens I do this…”, you’ve earned an explorer badge.

In testing, we have a whole new area called “exploratory testing”. Which leads me to our 5 Whys Challenger today: Huib Schoots. Huib is a master tester, has a ton of energy and will make you laugh in ways you didn’t think possible. He will lead two sessions at the conference. The first is a full-day tutorial called “How to be an explorer in the world“, and a session on conference day “Testability FTW!“.

Now you may think: I’m not a tester, what does it have to do with me? I got news for you: Everybody tests. As a job, as part of a job, and every time they ask “…but what happens if I do this…”. Check out the sessions .

But let’s turn to Huib and see what he has to say.
  • Why should people come to the conference?
Dunno, but why not?! Maybe because many awesome speakers have sessions? Or because it is a Practitioners conference where real stories are shared in stead of theoretical BS?
  • Why should people come to my session?
My talk will help you test faster, my workshop will help you test better. Who doesn’t want to do better and faster testing?
  • Why did I choose this topic?
Testability intrigues me ever since I got involved in IT! Exploring the world is what I have been doing all my life. After reading Keri Smith‘s book, I knew that there are many beautiful parallels to show the world… I am looking forward to “The empire tests first – making a Star Wars movie” by Gil. Because I know he is a great speaker with a nice sense of humor. Oh and because I love Star Wars of course 🙂
  • Why is the word for a fear of long words, hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia, so long?
I don’t know… and I don’t want to know. I have Logophobia and Verbophobia, so please stop talking about…. words…

Ok, but a few more words, this time from my personal experience. Up until two years ago, I thought testing is writing a bunch of steps you need to check through. And lots of procedures to write. Then I went to a conference called Agile Testing Days, and my mind was blown from how big the topic testing is, and how wonderful the testing community is in the agile space.

I’m glad that we are able to get speakers from ATD, like Huib in our conference. You don’t want to miss that opportunity. Now go register.
